Are you in the process of moving alone into a new place? Or maybe you’re starting to cook for the very first time in your life? If you answered yes to any of these questions, then it’s time you make your kitchen checklist.
What things do you need in your new kitchen? What basic items do you need to get started?
To help you with your venture into home-cooking, here are five things everyone should have in their kitchen:
1. Three Knives
You’ll need three knives to cut different items of food. We suggest a Chef’s knife, a serrated knife, and a paring knife to get started. You can buy a knife block that has all three, or you can buy each one separately, it’s up to you.
The Chef’s knife is used to do the bulk of your cutting, such as cutting meats and big items; while the serrated knife is used for slicing bread; and lastly, the paring knife is used for a variety of different items such as cheese, vegetables, and other food items.
2. A Cutting Board
When you have knives, you’re going to need a good quality cutting board. There are a number of different materials for cutting boards, but we prefer something that’s softer and porous, such as maple or walnut wood. Also, the bigger, the better so you can chop different items all at once on one board. You don’t really need several cutting boards; one solid cutting board is enough.
3. A Set of Pots and Pans
Cooking well is all about having the right pots and pans. Stainless steel is highly recommended as they don’t show a lot of wear and tear over time. They may be heavier than most pots and pans, but they last longer, meaning you get more from your money.
A pot is versatile as you can cook a variety of different kinds of dishes in it, such as pasta, soups, and stews. A frying pan, on the other hand, is essential for sauteing and frying all kinds of food. If you’re planning on cooking a lot, make sure you have different sizes, so you have a few options when you cook several dishes at once.
4. Mixing Bowls
You’ll have a hard time mixing ingredients if you don’t have a good set of mixing bowls. Glass mixing bowls are highly ideal as they are dishwasher safe, easy to clean, and they don’t react to any food products. And as a bonus, glass mixing bowls can also be used as a serving bowl for salads and other food items.
5. Basic Utensils
And last but not least, you’ll need a set of basic utensils to mix, toss, and whisk all of your ingredients together. Metal tongs, a spatula, a whisk, and a wooden spoon that’s heat-resistant will complete your kitchen checklist. Other small items that you must-have can also include a vegetable peeler, a cheese grater, a can opener, and of course, a potholder so you can easily and safely hold your pots as you cook or once you’re done cooking.
